Want to know something Bearded London hates? Gendered heteronormativity. We just can’t stand it. Yes, men have beards – but what about women?
Female facial hair, though sparser than men’s, definitely exists. So why don’t we hear people talking about it more? How widespread is it as a phenomenon?
Bearding the data
In 2012, Bearded London writer Christina Kenny surveyed 600 women online about their hair. And now, for the first time, Bearded London can reveal the truth about the lady beard – specifically, how women who have lady beards feel about the fact that, most of the time, they’re not supposed to.
Christina asked the question: “How open are you about your hair removal practices?” 170 women owned up to having a lady beard, and here’s what they said:
|“Not at all: I’d feel very uncomfortable discussing it with anyone.”||10||10||1||1||0||0|
|“Not very: I’d feel a bit uncomfortable discussing it even with close friends, family or my significant other.”||2||14||3||2||0||1|
|“Somewhat: I’d talk about it if asked directly, or if it came up in conversation, but perhaps not with anyone I didn’t know well.”||14||40||13||3||7||1|
|“Very: I’m happy to discuss it with my friends, family and / or my significant other.”||8||18||2||5||1||2|
|“Uncomfortably so: I’d be happy to talk about it with pretty much anyone.”||2||6||3||0||0||0|
|“I don’t bother with hair removal – this doesn’t apply to me.”||0||0||0||0||1||1|
|TOTAL IN AGE BRACKET||36||88||22||11||9||5|
The take-away points from the data:
- Nearly 30% of all women surveyed owned up to having a lady beard – but only 0.3% chose to leave it there.
- Over half (62%) of the women with lady beards felt actively uncomfortable talking about them.
- Only around a quarter (27%) of women felt comfortable talking about their female facial hair.
Ladies. You don’t own those beards enough.
